Questions

What patients ask before a first fitting

Do I need an exam if I see fine in my glasses?

Every lens fitting starts with an exam, because a lens can only be fitted to a healthy eye. If you wear lenses already, we check how they sit and how your eyes respond to them.

Is a scleral lens right for me?

That is decided at the exam, after we map the eye. Scleral lenses suit many hard-to-fit eyes and do not suit every eye, and results vary.

How many visits will I need?

Several, each with one job: the maps, the first lens, the adjustments and your handling lesson, then follow-up checks. How many rounds of changes your eye needs is not something we can know in advance.

Do you work with my vision plan?

We work with many vision plans. Call to confirm yours, and the patient coordinator will check before you come.

Why was part of my visit billed to medical insurance?

A visit for an eye problem or a follow-up is billed to medical insurance, while a routine exam goes to a vision plan. How fees work explains which visit goes where.

Can I fill my prescription elsewhere?

Yes. Your prescription is yours, and we give you a copy when your exam and fitting are complete.

What should I bring to my first visit?

Your glasses, the lenses you wear now and their cases, your eye drops, any letters from a cornea doctor and your insurance cards.

How much will it cost?

It depends on the visit and on your plan. We give you the fitting fee in writing before your first visit, and How fees work explains the rest.

What do I do in an eye emergency?

Sudden vision loss, flashes of light, a curtain over your vision, a chemical splash or an eye injury needs care now. Call our office right away or go to an emergency room. If you can't reach us, call 911.

Still have a question?

Call the office, or book a visit and ask the doctor in person.
