The stepped fitting

Every visit, step by step

The number of visits depends on your eye, not on a schedule. This is the usual order.

  1. 01
    Visit one

Step 1: The exam and the maps

    About 90 minutes.

    • An eye health exam

    • Maps of the cornea and the white of the eye

    • A plan in writing, with the fitting fee

  2. 02
    Visit two

    Step 2: The first lens

    About an hour.

    • A trial lens is placed

    • We wait while it settles, then check the fit

    • We look at the space behind the lens

  3. 03
    Visit three

    Step 3: The adjustments

About 45 minutes. Some eyes need this visit more than once.

    • Edge, height and curve changed

    • A new trial if the design changed a lot

  4. 04
    Visit four

Step 4: Your lenses and a handling lesson

    About 45 minutes.

    • You collect your own lenses

    • Insertion, removal and cleaning, until you can do it alone

  5. 05
    The first months

    Step 5: The first checks

Short visits at intervals we set with you.

    • The eye and the fit are checked

    • Wearing time is agreed from how your eye responds

  6. 06
    Every year

    Step 6: The yearly check

A full exam and a look at the lenses.

    • Eye health and a new set of maps

    • A copy of your prescription

Results vary, and so does the number of visits. We tell you where you are in the order as we go.

Between visits

Looking after the lens and the eye

  • What you will notice

You will feel the lens at first. We tell you what is expected and what is not, and you tell us at the next visit.

  • Cleaning and care

Fresh saline for every insertion, a clean lens and a case you replace. We write the steps down and teach them in person.

  • When to call us

Redness that does not settle, pain, light that hurts or a lens that will not come out: call the office. Do not force the lens.

  • Sudden vision loss, flashes of light, a curtain over your vision, a chemical splash or an eye injury needs care now. Call our office right away or go to an emergency room. If you can't reach us, call 911.

The handling lesson

You leave knowing how to do it alone

At the fourth visit our ophthalmic assistant teaches insertion, removal and cleaning, with your own lenses in your own hands. You practice until you are comfortable, and we send you home with the steps in writing.

What the lesson covers

  • Insertion without air bubbles

  • Removal with and without a tool

  • Cleaning, storage and the saline you use

Hands use tweezers to pick up a contact lens beside open lens cases on a white table.

Plan your first visit

Book the exam and the maps. We will go through the rest of the order with you at the end of the visit.
